Argyle Square was laid out in 1840-49 as a development of modest terraced housing around an irregularly shaped garden; in the early C19th the immediate area had been pleasure grounds. The garden, provided for residents of surrounding housing, was laid out with perimeter trees, serpentine paths and a circular central feature. Now open to the public, it is enclosed by reproduction railings and has been re-designed with a sports pitch at one end and landscaping at the other, although a number of mature London plane trees survive from the earlier layout. |
